Rory Johnson is the Sydney-based ceramic artist and wonderfully imaginative human behind Rory Story Ceramics, working on Gadigal land in Newtown.

Rory specialises in giving clay forms lives of their own, combining wheel-thrown ceramics with hand-built sculptural details and the sort of whimsical ideas that make you want to pick something up for a closer look.

Her work is playful and full of character. Functional forms become something a little stranger, funnier and more individual — sitting somewhere between everyday pottery and small pieces of ceramic art.

There is a wonderful celebration of imperfection in Rory's work. Evidence of the hand that made it isn't something to disguise; it's part of what gives each piece its personality.

And we think everyday objects could probably use a little more personality.

These aren't ceramics designed to disappear quietly into a cupboard. They're pieces to use, collect, notice and eventually make part of your own story.

Made slowly, made by hand and allowed to be a little weird.
